Hi, I’m Peyton Pye.
I started Marginalia & Magic as a way to pursue my dream of editing outside of a Big 5 Publisher. Like many writers, the dream of working for a Big 5 Publisher just was not working for me—so, I thought why not create my own editing space? That is where Marginalia & Magic came in.I have a BA, MA, and an MPhil, all in medieval history. I completed four years of a history PhD before deciding it was not for me (Fun Fact: If you stay that long, they give you a Master’s of Philosophy as a consolation prize!). During my time at various universities, I received extensive training in writing, structure, pacing, manuscript development, and all the trappings that come with that. I also spent four of those university years teaching undergraduates the same skill sets, allowing me to hone my skill set in manuscript evaluation and editing. As a trained medievalist, I believe that my expertise can really transform your work into something special. I have spent the better part of a decade studying the very social, cultural, and political institutions often incorporated into fantasy worldbuilding. I have studied the meaning of feudalism, the grandeur of knights, propaganda and power in an age before armies, television, and the internet, and even the personal stuff like marriage and religion. And don’t worry—what I don’t know, I have been trained on how to research! My Approach
My main objective as your editor (of any type) is to preserve your voice. I am here to help you highlight your writing, not to overpower it, and I pride myself on that. As such, I offer every client a free 1,000 word consultation edit to gauge our fit for each other. If we agree, then we will be off to the races! Whether you have booked a full developmental edit, a line edit, or a copy edit, I will do my utmost to get your manuscript in the best shape it can be in!
My workflow is best described as to the point. I may not comment every single one of my thoughts, but rest assured that I am just as invested in your manuscript as you are! If that sounds like you, then this could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Let’s make the dragons (and rabbits riding snails) in the margins come to life in your stories.

This love isn’t just a courtly romance—it’s true love.

From the Battle of the Somme to China’s Qing Empire, I’ve studied it all!
Academic Writing
From monographs to dissertations to master’s theses and back again, I have spent more than a decade writing and reading academic research and I’m ready to help you make the best of yours.
